The Mauritshuis: Iconic Masterpieces Shine in a New Light

Discover how Arius helped a world-class institution bridge the gap between forensic research and global fans with high-fidelity textured reproductions.

The Collaboration

Seeing Double with Iconic Dutch Masterpieces

The Mauritshuis, home to the world’s great collection of works from the Dutch Masters, is a world leader in adopting new technology for both research and accessibility. Arius is proud to have been chosen as a partner to produce high-fidelity textured replications that allowed these iconic works to be experienced in North America and beyond.

The Girl in the Spotlight: Conservation Without Compromise
In 2018, the Mauritshuis launched the “Girl in the Spotlight” exhibition, a deep-dive forensic study into Vermeer’s most famous work. While the original was housed in a glass-walled laboratory for analysis, the museum faced a challenge: how to satisfy the thousands of visitors who travel specifically to see "The Girl."

The Solution: A textured replication hung in the original's place, while the masterpiece underwent professional conservation in the same room.

The Result: Visitors enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They were able to get closer than ever before, taking photos and studying the brushstrokes in the reproduction, while observing the original undergoing various types of forensic analysis.

The Goldfinch: Celebrating Literature with Life-Like Texture

To mark the global phenomenon of Donna Tartt’s novel The Goldfinch, the Mauritshuis sought a way to bring Carel Fabritius’s masterpiece to a new generation of fans.

Using advanced scanning and printing techniques, the subtle textures of the bird’s feathers and the famous tethered chain were perfectly reproduced. These replicas allowed fans of both the artist and the book to own a piece of art history, which feels as authentic as the original Goldfinch hanging in The Hague.

“This new technology lets us do things that we weren't able to do before. It uses original dimensions, and it was a real revelation to see this reproduction. It lets you get a sense of what the texture of the painting is and how it's been built up in layers. It's a great joy to be able to touch the reproductions. To really feel what that texture is like, when we never do that, of course, with the real paintings. So that is really something new!”
