[Sansepolcro, Italy | May 05, 2026] -- This week, a technical milestone in art preservation was achieved in the heart of Sansepolcro, Italy. Arius Technology, in partnership with the Municipality of Sansepolcro, successfully deployed its latest mobile scanning innovation to capture the surface detail of Piero della Francesca’s iconic Renaissance masterpiece, The Resurrection.

This project marks a significant evolution in how we document wall-bound artworks. By bringing a mobile, high-precision scanning system directly to the fresco, the team was able to record the work’s texture and colour, down to 10 microns.

A First-of-its-Kind Collaboration

This implementation is the first of its kind in Italy, setting a new precedent for the digitization of frescoes, fixed pieces of history that can now be digitized at a new standard of accuracy.

During the scanning process, the Museo Civico Sansepolcro remained open to the public, allowing visitors to witness the convergence of 21st-century technology and Renaissance art in real-time. By inviting the community to see the scanner in action and interact with the technical team, the project emphasized a commitment to transparency and public engagement in the preservation process.

Creating an Immutable Legacy

The result of this effort is the creation of a comprehensive, high-fidelity digital twin. Using Arius’ proprietary ADMF™ (Art Digital Master File) process, the data captured provides an immutable record that will serve as a foundational asset for future generations.

"Our goal with this project was twofold," noted Arius CEO, Paul Lindahl. "We wanted to ensure the long-term safety and documentation of The Resurrection while demonstrating that modern technology can exist in harmony with historic preservation. This data isn't just an archive, it’s a living asset that unlocks new possibilities for restoration research, condition reporting, and even high-fidelity textured reproductions."

As the project concludes, the digital record created in Sansepolcro stands as a testament to the town's role in honoring its heritage. By bridging the gap between the "most modern of the ancients", as Piero della Francesca is often described, and the tools of the future, this collaboration ensures that one of the world's most significant cultural treasures is protected, understood, and accessible for years to come.
