Beyond the Lab: Bringing Forensic 3D Scanning Directly to the Fresco

Discover how Arius deployed its groundbreaking mobile scanning platform, Moneta, to create an immutable digital legacy for Piero della Francesca’s masterpiece, The Resurrection.

The Collaboration

Overcoming the Boundaries of the Fresco

In a historic partnership with the Comune di Sansepolcro, Italy, Arius successfully completed the on-site digitization of Piero della Francesca’s iconic Renaissance masterpiece, The Resurrection. Deeply rooted in the town’s identity and featured on its official coat of arms, this centuries-old fresco is recognized by art historians as one of the greatest works of Western art.

For centuries, the immovable nature of wall-bound frescoes made high-fidelity, conservation-grade digitization nearly impossible. Frescoes are uniquely vulnerable to environmental degradation and structural shifts, yet they cannot be moved to a lab.

Precision and Speed: Scanning In Situ

The Municipality of Sansepolcro became the first in Italy to adopt this futuristic approach, allowing the Arius team to bring our groundbreaking mobile scanning technology directly into the Museo Civico, capturing the masterpiece in situ without any risk to the original plaster.

Arius’ technical team safely recorded the fresco’s surface geometry and colour with extreme precision down to 10 microns (one-tenth the thickness of a human hair). This advanced system operates eight times faster than previous scanning generations, providing unprecedented field efficiency while strictly preserving the integrity of the masterpiece.

Crucially, the digitization was completed while the Museo Civico remained fully open to the public. Visitors, local citizens, and art historians had the unique opportunity to witness the convergence of 21st-century technology and Renaissance art in real-time, transforming a complex forensic data-capture project into a transparent celebration of cultural heritage.

The Technology

Arius combines forensic-grade ADMF™ data with artistic intuition to preserve history.

ADMF™ Scanning & Digital Back-ups
We capture both 3D surface geometry and true colour down to a 10-micron precision, generating an Art Digital Master File (ADMF™). This data serves as an immutable digital backup, permanently safeguarding the fresco's visual and physical DNA.
The Moneta™ Mobile Platform
Powered by advanced robotic technology from ABB, our mobile scanner is engineered specifically for immovable wall art, graffiti, and frescoes, delivering lab-grade accuracy directly to the site.
Condition Reporting & Preservation
Every ADMF record provides an unalterable mathematical "timestamp" of the work's current state. This allows conservators to track signs of aging, moisture damage, or microscopic structural shifts in wall-bound art over time.
Universal Access & Visualization
We transform complex 3D data into immersive digital twins and interactive research files. This enables global experts to study the fresco from every angle and unlocks new pathways for universal access and education.
The Partner

About Museo Civico Sansepolcro

Founded in 1975 in the hometown of Piero della Francesca, the Museo Civico Sansepolcro preserves the world’s most significant collection of works by the Renaissance master, including three historic frescoes and a twenty-one-panel polyptych. The institution is internationally recognized for promoting a legacy that beautifully synthesizes scientific insight with humanist culture

“This is a major technical milestone for our European operations. We are proud to partner with local Italian institutions that act as custodians of these extraordinary treasures. By capturing 10-micron forensic data right inside the museum, we ensure that the legacy of mathematical masters like Piero della Francesca will be protected and understood for generations to come.”

The Resurrection is a cultural treasure for the entire world. By digitizing this masterpiece in situ, we have effectively eliminated the structural barriers that once left frescoes vulnerable to undocumented deterioration. This project sets a new global precedent: we can now deliver a permanent, flawless digital record of humanity's most precious immovable assets, keeping these masterpieces exactly where they belong.”
